Research Associate

PhD - Botany ( Biotechnology)

Curriculum Vitae

Bio: Hena Hayat has completed her graduation and post-graduation from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, which is India’s leading agricultural university and pioneer in Green Revolution. She joined PAU as an ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research) nominee after qualifying national level test and held ICAR merit fellowship throughout her degree program. Hena has diverse experience from working on Plant Breeding for crop improvement using sustainable biotechnology and breeding strategies. She was actively engaged in research towards development of plant varieties for commercial release Labs, viz. CIMAP, Lucknow (a premier CSIR Lab) and IIPR, Kanpur (a premier ICAR Lab). Hena is NET qualified, and as an Assistant Professor she taught post graduate courses in Biotechnology at The Institute of Science, Mumbai (a Dr. Bhabha Institute). She holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) which bolsters her credentials for protection of innovations. The pursuit of something new which would provide the world with better food, feed, fiber, renewable fuel, and contribute to sustainable agriculture always motivated Hena. This led her to research on improvement of Jatropha Curcas crop with respect to its Bio-diesel characteristics for which she was awarded Ph.D. from Mumbai University. She was a recipient of UGC merit scholarship during her Ph.D. programme. Recognizing the growing call for more environmentally responsible and sustainable societies through application of emerging technologies, Hena volunteered as an Environment member at a Defence NGO’s project in Port Blair. She educated, implemented and monitored ‘Segregated Waste Collection’ process at the largest Centre followed by their ‘Reuse Reduce Recycle’ process. The project won the National ‘Swachhta Hi Seva’ award at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi on 02nd October 2017. She was awarded letter for appreciation for her dedicated work and contributions. As part of her current research at CGPL, IISc Bangalore, Hena is undertaking Life cycle assessment of Green ammonia synthesis. While Ammonia forms the bedrock of fertilizers and is crucial for global food security, its manufacturing is the world’s third biggest industrial process emitter of carbon dioxide. Hena’s current research is focused on Green ammonia which can potentially be produced with net zero emissions. Further, hydrogen being it’s derivative. Ammonia can also enable transportation of hydrogen as an energy source by densifying hydrogen at relatively low cost using well-understood technologies.
